Question

what is difference between electromagnetic and electrostatic forces

Open in App
Solution

Following are the differences between electrostatic and electromagnetic forces

1. Electrostatic forces are experienced by charges at rest while electromagnetic forces arises when charges are in motion.

2. Electrostatic forces are central forces i.e. it acts along the lines joining the centre to centre of the charges while electromagnetic forces are non central forces and do not act on line joining centre to centre of charges.

3. Electrostatic forces are governed by Coulomb’s law while electromagnetic forces are governed by Lorentz’s law.

4. Electrostatic forces always obey Newton’s third law of motion while electromagnetic forces do not obey Newton’s third law of motion.
