What is difference between Electronegativity and Electron gain enthalpy?

Why chlorine has more electron gain enthalpy than flourine? What are trends for Electron gain enthalpy and Electronegativity down the group for halogens?

Solution

There is significant difference between electronegativity and electron gain enthalpy.we can mark it down in tabular form.

electronegativity electrongain enthalpy
This gives idea about tendency to attract the the shared pare of electron in a covalent bond This gives idea about the tendency of an atom to form an anion
no energy change is related to it the energy is released when an electron is added to gaseous neutral atom.
It causes only polarization of bond it is concern with the formation of anion.

The periodic trend for electron gain enthalpy is that it increases across the period and decreases down the group. But the exception is found in case of Cl and F.Cl has more electron gain enthalpy than fluorine as electron-electron repulsion is more pronounced in case of F due to smaller size so it avoids addition of one more electron in it.

The trends for electronegativity:across the period increases.,down the group decreases.
