Question

what is difference between gram positive and gram negative?

Open in App
Solution

Gram positiveGram negative

These bacteria retain the crystal voilet dye and change into purple after Gram's staining.

These have a lipopolysaccharide exterior to cell wall which is thin.

Teichoic acid is present in the cell wall.

Murein content is 70 - 80 % & fat is less.

Lipoproteins are absent.

Most of them are susceptible to antibiotics & a few are pathogenic (causing diseases).

These bacteria do not retain crystal voilet and react only with counter stain and generally stain pink after Gram 's staining.

The peptidoglycan layer seen outside the plasma membrane in gram positive bacteria is much thicker than peptidoglycan layer present in gram negative bacteria.

Teichoic acid is absent.

Murein content is 10 - 20 % & lipids are more.

Lipoproteins are attached to the polysaccharide backbone.

Most of them are resistant to antibiotics & many are pathogenic.
