Question

what is difference between reflection refraction dispersion and scattering of light.

Open in App
Solution

All the physical quantities(reflection, refraction dispersion and scattering of light) have different phenomena.

Reflection:

This is a phenomenon in which light is rebound back to the same media after hitting the reflecting surface. Angle of incidence and reflection are same.

Reflection is found in mirrors.

Refraction:

This is a phenomenon in which light changes its direction of travel when it strikes between the interface of the two different media.

Angle of incidence and refraction are not same.

Refraction is found in lenses.

Dispersion: Dispersion is splitting of light into its seven constituent colors i.e. violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.

Scattering:

Scattering is the phenomenon by which a beam of light is redirected in many different directions when it interacts with a particle of matter. When sunlight strikes molecules in our atmosphere, the light is redirected in many directions. The blue light is scattered more than the red light causing the sky to be blue.
