Question

What is differential reproduction? Give its significance in speciation.

Open in App
Solution

Individuals within a species compete with each other for mates, and those that are best equipped to succeed in this struggle will produce more offspring. Therefore, the ability to produce more offspring with the same adaptations as the parents, allowing the species to survive under changed environmental conditions is known as differential reproduction.
The offsprings with more desirable traits and ability to reproduce will increase in number. These traits will be assimilated in the population and development of new species takes place.
