What is electric dipole moment ?
The measure of the separation of electrical positive and negative charges in a system of charges is called electric dipole moment.
It is the product of the magnitude of the charge and the distance between the centres of positive and negative charge.
It is denoted by symbol μ
Its unit is Coulomb meter (Cm) or Debye (D)
It is a vector quantity and its direction is from positive centre to negative centre.
If net electric dipole moment of a molecule is zero then it is non polar molecule and if net dipole moment is non zero then molecule is polar.
