What is electrochemical series? For what purpose is it used?

The arrangement of elements in increasing order of electrode potential E⁰ is known as electrochemical series. As per IUPAC rule, The series is made on the basis of standard reduction potential which is measured using standard hydrogen electrode.

Electrochemical series are used:

1. To predict relative reducing agent or oxidizing agent. More negative E⁰ shows high tendency to loose electron and so are stronger reducing agent and vice-versa.
2. To calculate the difference between the reduction potential of cathode and anode that is emf of the cell.
3. To predict the feasibility of the reaction i.e., whether a redox reaction can occur or not.
4. To predict whether a metal can displace other metal or not.
