Question

what is electronegative element is it gain of electron ex:Mg+ Cl2 MgCl2

where mg is positive (+) and cl2 is (-)negative which means mg =mg + 2e- and cl2 +2e-=cl2-

and this means Mg+ Cl2 MgCl2 where electronegative element cl2- combines with electropositive element mg

how can we say this electronegative element beacause electropositive element mg added (or) combained to electronegative element cl2 instead of removing mg

Solution

Hi,

Electronegative element is that element which has the tendency to accept electrons while an electropositive element is the one which gives away the electron. Here chlorine is an electronegative element which takes up electrons from electropositive element Magnesium.

An electropositive element loses electron and thus acquires positive charge upon it while an electronegative element takes electron and thus acquires negative charge.
