Hard water- is one which can’t form lather with soap.
This is because in hard water either bicarbonates of calcium or magnesium are present or sulphates and chlorides of calcium and magnesium.
Hard water hinder with the cleansing action of soap because soap is sodium salt of higher fatty acid thus when it combine with hard water calcium and magnesium salt of higher fatty acid is formed which is insoluble and hence interfere in cleansing action of soap.
