Question

what is lattice energy & how is it related to the stability of an ionic compound?

Open in App
Solution

Lattice energy is the energy required to break an ionic lattice into its constituents ions. If a bond is stable then high amount of energy is required to break the bond. So, higher the lattice energy, higher will be the energy required to break the ionic bond between the constituent ions in a crystal lattice. Therefore, higher will be the stability of the ionic compound.
