Question

what is main difference between avalanche effect and zener effect

Open in App
Solution

Hello,

Differences between avalanche and zener breakdown are

Avalanche effect Zener effect

(1) When we increase the reverse bias voltage thermally generated electrons(or holes) get very high kinetic energy. This electron strikes with atoms, it makes atom ionise. By this process there is chain reaction to generate charge carriers at this particular voltage, and produce high reverse current. This voltage is called Avalanche voltage. This effect is known as Avalanche effect.

(2)For silicon, it is 500V

(1) If impurity doping density(in diode) is very high then it has very thin depletion region (in reverse bias). The electrons can tunnel (quantum mechanical phenomena) easily through it. It produce high current at a particular reverse bias voltage.

This voltage is known as Zener voltage.

This effect is known as Zener effect.

(2) For silicon, it has the range 2 to 200V
