Solution

Mechanical energy is the sum of energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position and motion.

That means, ME = PE + KE

There are two formss of mechanical energies.

Potential energy: Energy of the body by virtue of its position. PE of a body of mass m at a height h from the surface of earth is, mgh. (g is acceleration due to gravity)

Kinetic energy: Energy of the body by virtue of its motion. KE of a body of mass m moving with speed v will be, (1/2)mv2.
