Question

what is meant by positive work done and negetive work done?

Open in App
Solution

Work done is positive or negative that depends upon the direction of force and the direction displacement.

If the direction force and the displacement are same then work done is said to be positive.

Therefore work done by the gravity on the body falling freely is +ve.

If the direction of displacement is opposite to the direction of force then work done is said to be negative.

when a body is thrown up, its motion is opposed by the gravity, therefore work done by the gravity on a body moving upward is -ve.
