Question

What is meant by saying that a solinoid has a directive property?

Open in App
Solution

A solenoid shows directive property because when it is placed in a magnetic field (which can be in vicinity of another magnet, a wire with flowing current etc) it gets a torque / moment and thus it gets aligned to the specific direction (according to the famous criteria like poles repels and unlike poles attract).

This alignment with the field is what makes the solenoid (or any magnet) exhibit a directive property.
