Question

What is mole fraction?

Open in App
Solution

Mole fraction of any component is the number of moles of that component by total number of moles of the solution. It is generally expressed as x1= n1/ (n1+n2)

where

x1= mole fraction of component 1

n1 = number of moles of component 1

n2 = number of moles of component 2

For e.g.

Mass of solute=3g

Molar mass of solute=60g/mol

Number of moles of solute=3/60=0.05moles

Mass of water=250g

Molar mass of water=18g/mol

Number of moles of water=250/18=13.89moles

Total moles=0.05+13.89=13.94moles

Mole fraction of solute=0.05/13.94=0.00359
