Optical illusions are perceptions of objects that do not exist but they arise due to their processing in the brain. Optical illusions arise in how we perceive the objects, its depth, orientation, organization of the object etc.

They happen because of the way our brain process the visual data and interprets it.

No, universe is not a trick of our eye; however what we call real etc may not be real.
