During the mid-19^th century, a movement for the promotion of political or cultural unity of all Slavs had started in most parts of Europe. Slavs were the largest ethnic and linguistic group of peoples in Europe belonging to the Indo-European linguistic family. The main focus was in the Balkans where the south Slavs had been ruled for centuries by other empires such as Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Venice.​

Features of the movement:

1. It developed as an intellectual and cultural movement in the 19th cent.
2. It was stimulated by the rise of romanticism and nationalism.
3. It grew with the awakening of the Slavs within the Austrian and Ottoman empires.
4. Slavic historians, philologists, and anthropologists spread a national consciousness among the Slavs.
