What is photochemical smog ? what are its harmful effects ?

PhotoChemical Smog: It is also known as Los Angeles Smog. This type of smog was first observed in Los Angeles in 1950.

Actually it is a mixture of a no. of irritating chemical compounds like, NO2 , O3, PAN( peroxyacylnitrates), aldehydes, ketones, hydrocarbons and CO.

It is formed in summer as, when NO2 and hydrocarbons are mixed in air and that air is exposed to extreme sunlight.

Harmful Effects:

  • All these compounds like PAN and ozone, produces irritatio to the eyes and also in respiratory system
  • They also damage many materials such as , metals, stones, building materials etc.
  • Ozone is particularly destructive to rubber.
  • The smog is harmful to fabrics, crops and ornamental plants.
  • NO2 present in this smog gives a brown colour to the smog which reuces visibility and can cause traffic and accidents.
