Solution

Refining of metal is nothing but the removal of impurities from crude metals or purifying the crude metal. After extraction from raw materials and reduction process, crude metals obtained are between 96 and 99 percent principal metal, the rest being impurities. Crude metals cannot be used by industry at this stage because of inferior physical, chemical, and mechanical properties.

Electrolytic refining method is most widely used for refining of metals. In this method, the process of electrolysis is used to obtain very highly purified metals. It is very widely used to obtain refined copper, zinc, tin, lead, chromium, nickel, silver and gold metals.
