An enzyme has the following characteristics:
They are proteins, only a few enzymes are nucleic acids (ribozymes).
Every enzyme has a primary, secondary and tertiary structures like any other protein.
They are heat labile and pH sensitive.
They have special sites called active sites at which the substrates of the reaction bind.
They are substrate specific and increase the rate of reaction several times. Like any other catalyst they remain unused at the end of the reaction.
They have a optimum temperature and pH range and work best in these conditions.
