Peritonium is a membrane that forms the lining of the abdominal cavity. It consists of a layer of mesothelium (simple squamous epithelium) that is supported by a thin layer of connective tissue. It acts as a channel for blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerves for these cavities.
Mesothelium is the layer which forms lining around several body cavities. It includes pleura, pericardium and peritoneum. Pleura is the lining around lungs, pericardium is the lining of heart and peritoneum is the covering of abdominal cavity. Mesothelium also covers internal layers of male and female reproductive organs.
