What is the difference between a cancer cell and a virus? In early times, was it ever considered that a cancer cell is a virus?

There is no comparison between cancer cell and virus as they are totally different from each other. Viruses are non living outside the host body and living when present inside host. They can have oncogenic genes in their genome which can cause cancer to host because they take over the host machinery for their replication.
