Anopheles causes malaria. Its body is slender and the wings have dark spots. Body rests with an angle to the surface, proboscis is line with the body.

Culex causes filariasis, bird malaria, encephalitis, dengue. Its body is stout and wings are unspotted, the body rests parallel to the surface, and proboscis in not in straight line with the body.
