The Allende government under the Presidency of Salvador Allende was in power in Chile from 1970 to 1973. Allende's government was primarily of Marxist or leftist orientation. It tried to establish socialism in Chile land reforms, nationalization of big industries and various other welfare measures like free health care.
President Allende's government was overthrown in 1973 in a coup led by the army chief, General Augusto Pinochet. Pinochet's government remained in power till 1990. Pinochet's government was a right-wing government following free market economic policies. It overturned the socialist measures introduced by Allende. During this time, Chile became a prosperous nation. But Pinochet's government was dictatorial and suppressed the freedom and civil liberties of the people. On the other hand, Allende had been democratically elected as President.
