Question

what is the difference between rayleigh scattering and raman scattering?

Open in App
Solution

Answer:

Rayleigh Scattering: In Rayleigh scattering when light encounters molecules in the air, the predominant mode of scattering is elastic in nature.

Raman Scattering: Raman scattering is the inelastic nature. In this experiment scattering of light by molecules is a very weak effect. If monochromatic light is scattered by molecules or crystal lattices spectral analysis shows an intense spectral line matching the wavelength of the light source.
