Question

what is the difference between trickling filters and activated sludge?

Open in App
Solution

Activated Sludge Trickling Filter
In this type the biomass or the sludge gets recycled. The biomass is in suspension. It is a process used in treating sewage and industrial waste waters using air and a biological solution composed of bacteria and protozoa. The sludge is transferred to a separate tank where it is decomposed by the anaerobic bacteria. The bio gas produced in the process is used as fuel or to produce electricity.
In this type the treated waste water is recycled. Here the biomass is steady. It is a simple tank with deep bed of stones.

The main aim of this type of recycling is to maintain high concentration of biomass in the aerating tank

The aim of this recycling is to maintain adequate hydraulic loading rate, without changing organic loading rate, so that all portions of the filter may be wetted adequately all the time.
