Question

What is the difference between Wurtz fitting & Wurtz coupling reaction?

Open in App
Solution

Wurtz coupling reaction

Wurtz Fitting reaction

It is a coupling reaction where two alkyl halide molecules are coupled in the presence of sodium metal in anhydrous ether or tetrahydrofuran to form a new C-C bond, giving rise to symmetrical alkanes (2 alkyl groups bonded together).

CH3-X + 2Na + X-CH3 ----> CH3-CH3 + 2NaX

Dry ether

This reaction involves two aryl halides, which are coupled in the presence of sodium in presence of anhydrous ether to give diaryl hydrocarbons.

2C6H5I + 2Na -------> C6H5-C6H5 + 2NaI

dry ether

Good yields are obtained

Yields are less due to the formation of side products
