What is the direction of energy flow in an ecosystem? Why is it unidirectional?

Energy always flow from lower level to higher level means producers to carnivores. It flow in one direction only because producers are the one who have a capability to capture energy and transfer them to the higher levels. Carnivores or herbivores cannot do it alone.
