Question

What is the effect of the thickness of the bulb on the sensitivity and accuracy of a thermometer.

Open in App
Solution

A thermometer with a thicker or a larger bulb will have the same accuracy and sensitivity as a thermometer with a smaller bulb. So thickness does not affect the sensitivity and accuracy of the thermometer. However, it does affect the response time of the thermometer, that is the time in which the thermometer measures the temperature. The response time will be larger because it will take longer time for the mercury to take the temperature of the surroundings.
