what is the exact use of carbon brushes and split ring commutators in an electric motor?

Solution

The carbon brushes in a generator are used to connect external circuits in the generator to the rotor through the commutator. Split rings keep the current flowing in the same direction in an electric motor as alternating current reverses direction its direction.
