Question

What is the function of additional spermatogonium ?

Open in App
Solution

During spermatogenesis, the spermatogonia (germ cells) present near the basal lamina of the somniferous tubules undergoes mitotic division to produce two diploid primary spermatocytes. One primary spermatocyte remains near the basal lamina and generates the additional spermatogonia. The other spermatocyte undergoes two meiotic divisions (meiosis I) to produce two haploid secondary spermatocytes and then four haploid spermatids or sperm cells (Meiosis II). The additional spermatogonia functions to produce the primary spermatocytes again by mitosis.
