Question

What is the gravitational factor for Moon and Sun if the gravitational factor on earth is 1 ? Find the weight of Tony on both sun and moon if he initially weighs 28 kg on earth?

What will be the weight of Tony in space betwwentwo stars? Give reasons for your answer.

Solution

We know,

Acceleration due to gravity of earth is 9.81 m/s2

Acceleration due to gravity of moon is 1.62 m/s2

Acceleration due to gravity of sun is 273.95 m/s2

Now,

The gravitational factor for earth is 1 or 9.81/9.81.

So, the gravitational factor for moon is = 1.62/9.81 = 0.17

The gravitational factor for sun is = 273.95/9.81 = 27.93

Mass of Tony is 28 kg. His mass remains same everywhere.

So, weight of Tony on moon is = 28 × 1.62 = 45.36 N

Weight in Tony on sun is = 7670.6 N

In space Tony will experience weightlessness. Not because there is no gravity (there is gravitational field in space also) but because he will be in some orbit and his weight will be neutralized by the centrifugal force as he is in an orbit.
