Question

What is the least number of meiotic and mitotic divisions required to produce 500 male gamets respectively from the microspore mother cells in angiosperms?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student!

Microspore mother cell develops into the pollen sac, Diploid microspore mother cell forms 4 haploid microspores by meiosis. Each microspore then undergoes mitosis to form an immature pollen grain a tube cell and generative cell. The generative cell undergoes mitosis to form two male gametes. One diploid microspore mother cell produces 8 male gametes and there are 1 meiotic and 8 mitotic divisions.

To produce at least 500 male gametes, approximately 63 diploid microspore mother cell are required which would undergo 63 meiotic divisions to generate 252 microspores which would undergo mitotic division twice to produce 504 male gametes.

In total there would be 63 meiotic and 504 mitotic mitotic divisions.
