what is the meaning of sans-colluttes?

Open in App
Solution

Members from the Jacobin club came to be known as the sans-culottes. Sans-culottes literally mean ‘those without knee breeches’. The men wore long striped trousers similar to those worn by dock workers to set themselves apart from the elites of the society, who wore knee breeches. They also wore red cap in addition to this dress code as the red cap symbolised liberty. Women however did not wear these caps.
