Question

what is the perpendicular and parallel force? Do we consider a work being done only when the force applied to create displacment in the body is opposing some force which tends to make the object at rest?

Solution

Perpendicular force is a force which acts in a direction that is perpendicular to the surface of the body or normal to it.

Parallel force, on the other hand, is a force which acts in a direction that is parallel to the surface of the body.

Now, work can only be done if (net) force applied produces displacement in a body not otherwise.
