What is the real meaning of steric hindrance? How does steric hindrance increase with the increase in the number of alkyl groups?
Part : I
Steric Hindrance :
In a molecule, every atom or group occupies a space and if two same atoms or groups are brought to close to each other, there is overlapping of electron clouds resulting in repulsive forces between the two atoms or groups. This phenomena of increase in repulsive force due to large no. of groups at same atom is called as Steric Hindrance
Part : II
With increase in no of alkyl group on same carbon overcrowding of same group take place due to which electron clouds of same atoms of side chain tends to repel each other cause steric atmosphere and secondly they occupy large no.of groups on same atom in small space which cause hindrance. This is the cause for increase in steric hindrance with increase in alkyl groups.
