what is the reason behind the different arrangement of same carbon atoms in case of diamond and graphite?
Dear student!
It is because of allotropy, due to which there is the tendency in elements to occur in more than one structural form and so the two allotropes of carbon i.e. diamond and graphite have different crystal structures. In diamond and graphite the arrangements of bonds differ so as the graphite has flat crystal due to sp2 hybridization and while in diamond the hybridization is sp3 which gives it a cubic structure. So,basically the hybridization is responsible for different arrangements.
