Solution

Erasmus and Luther both wrote extensively on theology. Their writings were based upon topics from spiritual authority to ideal Christian piety. They both were involved with making the New Testament more readable for the laymen

  • Erasmus with his Greek and Latin translation
  • Luther with his German translation.

They did not follow the same path because of the following fundamental reason:

Martin Luther was bound by the Word of God, therefore the content of scripture was utmost important to him. He wanted true reformation in the church i.e. reformation in doctrine and practice.

While on the other hand, Erasmus was a Renaissance rationalist who placed reasons above Scriptures and cared little about knowledge of truth. He simply wanted moral reform in the Roman Catholic Church.
