What is the relationship between numerical value of measurement and the size of the unit used for measurement ?

For large value we use large unit and for small values we use small unit in general life. e.g, 24 hours, 5 seconds etc.
but unit do not change the magnitude . In scientific terms we use fundamental units for all type of magnitude.
