what is the science behind a prism?? can a rainbow occur even if white light is passed through a crystal??
Hi Devayya!
Dispersion of light is the science behind a prism. When a composite light passes through a prism, the constituent colours get dispersed. The light rays undergo refraction at the air- glass interface. The deviation for different constituent colours is different. So, the light splits up into its constituent colours. The constituent colours of white light may split up if it is passed through a crystal also. It depends on the angle of the incident ray and the refractive index of the crystal.
Cheers!!
