What is the secondary meristem? Are there primary and secondary meristems?

Open in App
Solution

Meristems are regions very fast rate of cell division in plants which are responsible for growth of the entire plant. Plants have different kind of meristems:

1. Apical meristems: it is present at the growing tips of stems and roots and increases the
length of the stem and the root.
2. Lateral meristem : The girth of the stem or root increases due to this.

3. Intercalary meristem :meristem at the base of the leaves or internodes (on either side of the
node) on twigs.
Both apical and intercalary meristems are primary meristems because they appear early in life of a plant and contribute to the formation of the primary plant body. The meristem that occurs in the mature regions of roots and shoots of many plants particularly the ones that produce woody axis and appear later than primary meristem is called Secondary
or lateral meristem.
