Wordsworth and Keats were both steeped in the tenets of Romanticism, a reaction to the strict rigidity of form and grandiloquence of subject that was characteristic of the Neoclassicism of the Augustan age. Their love for and depiction of nature in simple language but profundity of thought and beauty of expression characterised their poetry. Both poets intended to discard the lofty and grandiose idiom of eighteenth century verse to employ a selection of the 'real language' of men and women, composed in a vivid state of sensation, a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings which would be written when emotions were recollected in tranquility. Their work centered around nature, highlighting how man was becoming dehumanized by mechanical conception of life in urban and industrial society. They wrote about the beauty of nature, its ability to bring succour to the harsh realities of life in the city. Wordsworth believed that nature could be our teacher, it was the primary source of beauty in this world and that we can only find true joy in nature. Nature was held as mankind's best teacher for a moral code of conduct, it was this pantheistic form of religion that informs most of Wordsworthian poetry. He believed that there was much to learn beyond what books had to offer, though the latter was necessary, one could not be simply restricted to books for their learning. Keats talked about the beauty of nature, the sensual and spiritual pleasures of partaking that beauty and the relief and joy it brought, as a thing of beauty was a joy forever. Keats believed that a life away from nature could only cause more fret and fever for human beings, human love and beauty were transient and could not be sought forever. It was nature which could provide a permanent source of sustenance for the hungry heart and mind.
