Question

what is the use of linear combination of atomic orbitals method in molecular orbital theory (MOT) ?

Open in App
Solution

LCAO is a quantum superposition of atomic orbitals and is used in calculating the molecular orbitals.
Actually molecules are built from two or more atoms. Thus the probability of finding electron in that molecule is defined by the molecular orbital which are given by the Linear combination of atomic orbitals of the combining atoms.
The LCAO is basically the building block of the Molecular orbital model.
