Question

What is the use of synapse? dosent it slow down the flow of electrical impulse

Open in App
Solution

Synapse is a gap or a junction between two neurons. In this region, the neurotransmitters are released which passes the electrical or the chemical signals from one neuron to the other. The transfer can be from nerve to nerve (neuro-neuro), or nerve to muscle (neuro-myo).
Yes, Synapses do break the flow of action potentials and slows down the flow of electrical impulses but they are useful in the following ways.
  1. They see that the impulses travel only in one direction.
ii) They connect neurons via neurotransmitters with many, many other neurons. This increases the range of possible responses to any particular stimulus or group of stimuli.
iii) It is said that synapse plays a role in the formation of memory. When the neurotransmitters activate the receptors across the synaptic cleft, the connection between the two neurons gets strengthened. Both the neurons will be active at the same time, as a result of the receptor's signalling mechanisms. The strength of two connected neural pathways results in the storage of information, resulting in memory.
