What is the valency of oxide?
Also explain aluminium oxide formula.
An oxide is a chemical compound that contains at least one oxygen atom and one other element in its chemical formula. Metal oxides typically contain an anion of oxygen in the oxidation state of −2. Hence valency of oxide is 2.
Let us find the formula for aluminium oxide by criss cross method.
The oxidation state of Aluminium (Al) is +3 and oxygen (O) is -2 i.e. Al3+ O2-. Now cross the oxidation number of both ions, 3 becomes the subscript of oxide ion and
2 becomes the subscript of Al. It becomes Al2O3. This is the chemical formula of aluminium oxide.
