Question

what is the volume at stp of 7.1 g of chlorine?

Open in App
Solution

Molecular weight of chlorine (Cl2) = 35.5 × 2 = 71g
Thus 1 mole of Cl2 = 71g
We know 1 mole of any gas at STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure, i.e. 0oC temperature and 76 mm Hg pressure) occupy 22.4 L

Hence 71 g Cl2 at STP occupy 22.4 L
1 g Cl2 at STP occupy 22.4/71 L
7.1 g Cl2 at STP occupy (22.4/71) × 7.1 L = 2.24 L
Thus volume occupied by 7.1g chlorine at STP is 2.24 L
