Question

what triteria use to write the symbols of elements

Open in App
Solution

Each element has a symbol to represent them at the Periodic Table and in Chemistry generally. These symbols of chemical elements must be unique and no repetitions are allowed. The symbols are taken from their names, the easiest way: the symbol is the first letter (capitalized), from the name ( H, for Hydrogen; O for Oxigen, C for Carbon, U for Uranium...) When there are already an element with the same inicial letter , the symbol corresponds to the inicial letter (capitalized) + another representative one, (non capitalized) ( Helium symbol is He, for Chlorine is Cl and so on). But Some elements have names in latin (as Natrium = sodium, Na).

Rules followed while the writing symbols for elements

While the writing symbols for elements is to capitalize the first letter of the symbol.

Symbols for elements cannot have more than two letters. Although there are symbols with three letters, it is just because the scientists haven't decided it as a real element.

Finally, the second letter can't be capitalized i.e. it should be in lower case.

All the rules and symbols are approved by I.U.P.A.C. [International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry].
