Question

What type of non idealities are exhibited by cyclohexane-ethanol and acetone- chloroform mixture? give reason.

Open in App
Solution

The Ethanol and Cyclohexane will show positive deviation from the Raoult's law as ethanol molecules are capable of forming hydrogen bonds, addition of cyclohexane to ethanol decreases the extent of hydrogen bonding between the ethanol molecules, due to which the attractive forces are reduced. As a result, the ethanol and cyclohexane molecules can easily easily escape the solution leading to increase in the vapour pressure.

The acetone and chloroform will show negative deviation from Raoult's law because hydrogen bonds are formed between oxygen atom of acetone and hydrogen atom of chloroform. The interaction between acetone and chloroform molecules increases and the escaping tendency of the molecules decreases, leading to decrease in the vapour pressure.
