Rainwater harvesting is considered a good option against the multipurpose projects, both economically and socially. The advantages accruing from rainwater harvesting as opposed to multipurpose projects are:

• Not make displacement of the local population
• Not curb means of livelihood of the local population
• No environmental degradation
• No submergence of trees
• No detouring of river courses and effects, it has on the aquatic life
• No triggering of floods due to sedimentation
• No augmentation in the loss caused due to floods
