Open in App
Solution

The Marathas had an efficient administrative system that was developed in the course of their conquests. The revenue demands were introduced taking local conditions into account. Trade and agriculture were encouraged. The two types of taxes levied by Marathas were Chauth and Sardeshmukhi. Chauth was the one-fourth of the land revenue claimed by zamindars while Sardeshmukhi was one-tenth of land revenue claimed by the head revenue collector. Trade routes emerged in regions controlled by Marathas, cities like Indore and Ujjain prospered while Burhanpur became an important trading centre.
